It was good, except for the time the mafia stormed into our practice.“Whoa, hold up. Mafia?”Yeah, we’d lost three or four games in a row, and the mafia didn’t like that,” Foster said. “They came to deliver a message. Being from New Orleans, I was this close [holding thumb and forefinger together] from getting out of there.”Coach Rick Carlisle said he quickly noticed the difference in Foster when he arrived back from Europe.”His shooting has improved and his range has improved,” Carlisle said. “And his understanding of the pro game – and European professional ball has some similarities to the NBA. He’s back here to put himself in a position to make the team.”Foster agreed. He has no intentions of going back to Europe.
Ovvio, non si tratta di una cosa veritiera e neppure intelligente da dire. Anzi. Rimane l’amarezza, perchè dell’esperienza che lo stesso Carlisle giudica per certi versi positiva resta solamente l’episodio dell’irruzione durante l’allenamento. Che non ha nulla a che vedere con la criminalità organizzata. Così come Caserta, la mia Calabria e tutto il Sud hanno diritto, fino a prova contraria, di essere considerate vittime delle Mafie, e non certo ad esse assimilate tout court.
Tolte le scemenze dette resta un episodio che fa però parte, a qualsiasi latitudine, di un rapporto sbagliato tra tifoseria (organizzata o meno) e club. Quanto per colpa dei tifosi, quanto per colpa del club e quanto del contesto non lo so e neppure mi interessa. So che il contesto non è un’eccezione, semmai una quasi-regola quando le cose “vanno male”. Il che non dovrebbe autorizzare nessuno a farne fuori dal vaso l’enorme quantità fatta da Foster. Ma neppure qualche litro in meno, tipo interrompere allenamenti in quella maniera. Sarebbe stato meglio parlarne di più e con meno vesti strappate all’epoca, magari proprio coi Foster della situazione (senza giustificare neppure all’1 per mille l’idiozia dell’intervista).
Al di là delle scempiaggini resta infatti un rapporto difficile tra chi vien dagli USA ed i nostri club. Un rapporto basato su pregiudizi, magari meno forti di quelli dell’ex-giocatore di Vanderbilt ma sempre pregiudizi. Su muri eretti da una parte e dall’altra, su avventure oltreoceano che durano spesso lo spazio di un mattino e ben che vada si trascinano per obbligo. Senza un vero sforzo da una parte e dall’altra per superarli, quei pregiudizi, sarà difficile costruire qualcosa di duraturo, anche per chi semplicemente vorrebbe vedere i giocatori dare il proprio massimo

avendo vissuto diversi anni a Caserta, avendo giocato durante alcuni di questi, durante l’adolescenza, nella allora Phonola Caserta, conosco diverse persone che stimo e voglio bene, ed altrettanto conosco abbastanza bene quell’ambiente. Quando ci fù l’episodio dell’invasione rimasi scioccato, oltre che profondamente mortificato e deluso; non potei credere che si potesse arrivare a quel punto, per uno sport, che dovrebbe essere sinonimo di lotta, competizione, ma sempre nel rispetto. Retorica a sociologia a parte, quindi, la mia opinione è che la reazione di Foster, allora come in questi giorni, è assolutamente comprensibile, per quanto abbia usato certe parole con troppa leggerezza. Dico questo perché mi metto nei panni di un ragazzino (non scordiamo che quando venne in Italia aveva, credo, non più di 22 anni) che si trova per la prima volta nella sua vita in un altro continente, pieno di speranza, proveniente da un ambiente che sicuramente non ha nulla a che vedere con quello italiano… beh, ripeto, è appena comprensibile. Semmai, con queste dichiarazioni, ha dimostrato non tanto poca maturità, quanto, invece, poca conoscenza, questo sì; ma credo nella sua assoluta buona fede.
Parlando da tifoso della Eldo Caserta, caro Flavio, sono fortissimamente deluso dal comportamento di certa gente che si finge appassionata di basket ma che in realtà desidera solamente un pretesto per “distruggere” (in senso fisico e morale). Biasimo profondamente coloro che sono intervenuti al sopraddetto allenamento cosi’ come biasimo tutti i presunti intenditori di basket che volevano cacciare da Caserta Shan dopo due giornate, creando addirittura un gruppo su facebook per i sostenitori dell’ “allontanamento”. Questi avvenimenti non fanno certo bene al morale di un giocatore e se è vero che Foster ha avuto dei pregiudizi sull’ambiente campano è anche vero che nessuno ha fatto qualcosa per cancellare gli stessi. L’Italia non è solo mafia pizza e mandolino, ma ci dovrebbe essere qualcuno che lo dice, o meglio, lo fa capire con una buona condotta, agli stranieri in arrivo, soprattutto se costoro giocano nella squadra di basket cittadina.
Premetto che non conosco il contesto di Caserta, ma le irruzioni agli allenamenti sono solo l’apice di una situazione che ha “contaminato”, a mio avviso, l’ambiente del basket italiano in generale. Le polemiche, spesso eccessive e fuori luogo, contro tutto e tutti coloro che gravitano attorno a questo mondo, assieme ai ricorsi, controricorsi, accuse ad arbitri, dirigenti e giornalisti rappresentano la copia di quanto di negativo esiste già da qualche decennio nel rutilante mondo pallonaro nostrano. Spero vivamente che il movimento della pallacenestro italiana, che non è che scoppi proprio di salute, decida di cambiare direzione perchè secondo me ha decisamente imboccato la via sbagliata.
Riguardo Foster non c’è molto da dire, se non che ha sparato delle enormi sciocchezze delle quali forse non si rende neanche conto e spero che in qualche modo la vicenda venga chiarita dal diretto interessato. Certo però che dispiace constatare che all’estero la nostra reputazione sia sempre associata ai soliti stereotipi e in particolare al fenomeno della criminalità organizzata, di cui probabilmente lo stesso Foster non ha poi tanta cognizione visto le sue dichiarazioni a dir poco strampalate.
